Summary
The travel notes begin with the author recounting a train journey from Suez to Cairo, in which he observes the characteristics of the region. In particular, he praises Egypt’s ability in irrigating the soil through the Nile’s water. Upon reaching Cairo, the author finds no rooms available at the Hotel d’Orient, but finds accommodation elsewhere. He describes the local architecture, including charming inner yards. The following day, he attends horse races just outside Cairo, near the Nile, in honor of the Austrian emperor. Later that evening, he enjoys a theatrical performance. The next day is dedicated to exploring the pyramids with the Russian ambassador, followed by visits to the museum and the Nile barrage. The author paints a picturesque representation of the city, emphasizing its beauty even at night. After spending a few days in Alexandria, the author reflects on the potential for Russia to develop commerce with Egypt. According to him, Russia should not overlook this opportunity, but this would necessitate the establishment of a railroad to the south of Russia. The journey concludes in Constantinople and Odessa.
