Glushinskii, I.P.: The Suez Canal

Author

Glushinskii, Iosif Pavlovich (1834-1898)

Title

Suezskii kanal, Sankt-Peterburg 1870

The Suez Canal

Summary

The essay is divided into three, untitled sections. In the foreword, Glushinskii acknowledges the importance of the newly established Suez Canal, and states that he has had the chance to partake in its opening. Hence, having familiarised himself with the construction works, he can describe the Canal’s most relevant features. He also explains the structure of the essay: in the first part he will focus on the topography of the region and the previously failed attempts at connecting the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea; in the second part he will describe the construction works; in the third he will talk about the current state of the Canal. Finally, he adds a remark about the fact that he will not deal with the significance of this innovation for international trades, since many others, more expert than him in economy, have written about this.
