The full title of the play is The Priest of Osiris: The Mystery of the Pyramid of the Pharaoh Khаfre. One-act play in verse. The plot can be summarized as follows: Aira, widow of Pharaoh Khefre, is beloved by Osorkhon, a priest of Osiris, who, in a monologue, confesses his love for her. Aira prays in front of the statue of Osiris, mourning her husband, while Osorkhon secretly watches her.

The young Ivan Andreev leaves for Ethiopia, sent by a Russian firm aiming to establish successful business relationships between the two countries. He leaves behind his wife Ania, whom he gradually forgets as he becomes a “true Abyssinian”, learning the language and living according to the local customs.

The play consists of two acts and was firstly published in the newspaper Novoe vremia (1890); it was later slightly altered and staged at the satirical theatre Krivoe zerkalo (1908). The beautiful Vampuka, an African princess, is in love with a young man called Lodyre. Unfortunately, the Ethiopians are searching for her, as their king, Strofokamil, wants to marry her after having killed her father.
