Summary
The book, reporting the travel notes of a tourist embarking from Odessa to Egypt in 1885, aims to share the author’s impressions and to provide practical advice for other travellers. Alexandria is described with mixed feelings: while the Arab quarter offers cleanliness and comfort, the European area still bears the consequences from the 1882 British bombardment, making it less inviting. Nonetheless, the city’s surrounding landscapes and lavish villas leave a positive impression, with the author particularly captivated by the local flora. Davidovich then travels by train to Cairo, a city that quickly enchants him. Having explored both the Arab and European quarters, the author goes on an excursion to the pyramids. Fifteen days after leaving Odessa, on the 15th of August, the author concludes the journey, returning to Alexandria to travel back home.
