Overview

Vasilii Nemirovich-Danchenko was a Russian writer and journalist, brother of the renowned theatre director and playwright Vladimir. A dedicated traveller (and a member of the Russian Geographical Society), he published many books, travelogues and essays, drawing inspiration from his experiences around Russia and abroad. Well acquainted with North Africa, he wrote memoirs, fiction and essays on the whole African continent, which he mainly published in journals. His collaboration with “Vokrug sveta” stands out, in this regard, for its consistency. Many of his works were signed with pseudonyms (N. D-ko, N. D., among others). He is considered one of the first war correspondents in Russian history, having covered the Russo-Turkish war of 1877-1878 for “Novoe vremia”.
