Uganda, or Uganeida. A Geographical Essay
Keywords
Summary
In the introductory pages the author claims that the British government offered the Jews some land in East Africa, to settle on an autonomous basis. They provide a literal translation of excerpts from the document containing the offer. They assert that this proposal was followed by many debates, despite sounding very interesting. The VI Sionist congress, however, decided to submit the offer to a special commission. The author wonders whether the promised land in Uganda may manage to replace the dream of returning to Sion, and claims that “We are far from taking the liberty of solving such an important question of global significance, but we believe that the reader will be interested to familiarise himself with the country offered to the Jews for settlement”. The author then provides an overview of the main characteristics of Uganda, including its borders, climate, flora, fauna, population, commerce, and political situation. The author’s main sources include the Encyclopedia Britannica, as well as geographical studies by prof. W. Sivers, A. Kruber, S. Grigoriev, А. Barkov and S. Chefranov.
