Helwan, Near Cairo. A Winter Sanatorium in the Country of the Pyramids

Summary

This pamphlet aims to promote Helwan as a place to heal different health issues, especially by advertising Doctor L. Kushnir’s sanatorium. Built by Dr Kushnir in 1904, the sanatorium gradually expanded to include a boarding house, a music hall and a chemico-microscopy laboratory. It was intended for people (including children) suffering from kidney and urinary tract diseases, rheumatism, bronchitis, diabetes, asthma and other illnesses, with the exception of tuberculosis and syphilis. The pamphlet is divided into short sections: Helwan: a sanatorium in the desert; The climate of Helwan and its sulphur springs; Diseases for which Helwan is useful; The sanatorium of Dr L. Kushnir; Life in Helwan: entertainments, impressions, strolls; and How to get to Helwan. Apart from Kushnir’s widely publicised sanatorium, Helwan was indeed a popular destination. Among its frequent visitors was the writer Lesia Ukrainka, who stopped there several times for health reasons.
