Helwan, Near Cairo. A Winter Sanatorium in the Country of the Pyramids

Summary

The aim of this pamphlet is to promote Helwan as a place for healing from different health issues and, especially, to advertise the sanatorium of doctor L. Kushnir. Built by the doctor in 1904, the sanatorium had progressively grown to include also a boarding house, a music hall, and a chemico-microscopy laboratory. The establishment was meant for people (even children) who suffered from kidney and urinary tract diseases, rheumatisms, bronchitis, diabetes, asthma and other illnesses, with the exception of tuberculosis and syphilis. The pamphlet is divided into small chapters (Helwan, a sanatorium in the desert; The climate of Helwan and its sulphur springs; Diseases for which Helwan is useful; The sanatorium of dr. L. Kushnir; Life in Helwan: entertainments, impressions, strolls; How to get to Helwan?). Apart from Kushnir’s sanatorium, which was widely publicised, Helwan was indeed a popular destination. Among other frequent visitors, the writer Lesia Ukrainka also stopped there several times for health reasons.
